Presentation

The Multicenter Graduate Program in the area of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (PMBqBM) aims to establish a productive association between competent researchers geographically dispersed in public institutions in the country, where the implementation of independent programs is not yet possible (called Associated Institutions) and researchers of consolidated postgraduate programs (called Nuclear Institutions). With this, it is intended to establish a network of public institutions to stimulate the creation of new research groups, the formation of masters and doctors in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and in the long term, the creation of new postgraduate programs in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Associated Institutions.

The general objectives of the PMBqBM are: a) to provide knowledge in the areas of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, with rigorous training in basic experimental principles that enable the study of any biological problem, preparing its students for the performance of research and higher teaching activities in the area , respecting the code of good scientific practices; b) encourage research and increase scientific productivity in the area of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; c) increase the number of professionals with modern, differentiated and excellent qualifications in the area, with the capacity to compete in the best national and international centers.

Research lines

Biochemistry in Pathological States: The study of chronic and degenerative diseases the elucidation of biochemical pathways that make up integrative mechanisms of cell signaling and may pave the way for the identification of therapeutic targets for various diseases.

Biotechnology: Current areas of biotechnology include the production of biofuels, prospecting for molecules of technological interest, production of vaccines and products for use in diagnostics, among others. Examples: screening of organisms that produce molecules of technological interest, such as: hydrolytic enzymes (such as hemicellular enzymes, xylanases, cellulases, amylases, proteases, enzymes involved in the degradation of sugars present in biomass, among others), antioxidant, antimicrobial, antifungal compounds , anti-inflammatory, antitumor, biosurfactant, etc.

Functional Genomics: Studies on the Regulation of Gene Expression in Organisms under Different Conditions. Metagenomics: study of the genome of the set of a microbiota found in a given habitat, construction of a metagenomic library with a mixed genome, which allows the identification of genes from unknown organisms.

Cell Mediators Study of cell signaling pathways that govern and coordinate cell activities and functions under different conditions, such as cell division, growth and differentiation, cell-cell interaction processes, cell-extracellular matrix, cell surface-nucleus-organelles. Study of mediators involved in these processes, such as neurotransmitters, hormones, nucleotides, etc. Search for compounds with different activities, such as anti-parasitic, anti-microbial, anti-cancer, anticoagulant, etc.
