This study aims to analyze intonation contours of Tag Questions (TQ) in Brazilian Portuguese (BrP) and in English as an Additional Language (EAL). Grounded in Intonational Phonology (PIERREHUMBERT, 1980; BECKMAN; PIERREHUMBERT, 1986; LADD, 2008) and in Prosodic Phonology (SELKIRK, 1984; NESPOR; VOGEL, 2007), we sought to answer the following question: in what manner are the intonation contours of TQs in BrP and EAL made? We have as a hypothesis that EAL learners use a rising intonation contour in TQs due to the influence of the inflection at the end of the interrogative sentences of BrP in the dialect of potiguar speakers. The study is a Quali-quantitative research, quasi-experimental, cross-sectional and intra-participant. The research was conducted in the city of Mossoró – RN. Twenty Brazilian advanced EAL learners were selected. For data collection, two experiments were conducted, one for BrP and the other for EAL. The BrP experiment consisted of an interview, with spontaneous conversation, in which the suggested themes were: food, travel, music, movies, books and social media. The EAL experiment consisted of readings of short controlled speech dialogues, with TQs, which could be rhetorical or real questions. In this experiment, we divvied up the subjects in two groups: with and without instruction. In this research, we have analyzed three dependent variables: types of TQs in BrP; intonation of TQs in BrP and EAL; and Prosodic Boundary (pause). The independent variables were explicit instruction and subject. The results of the BrP experiment showed that four types of TQs were used: “né”, “sabe”, “entendeu” and “não é”, with different frequencies. The tag “né” was used with greater frequency than the tags “sabe”, “entendeu” and “não é”. Among these, the tag “sabe” was the most utilized. Out of the 519 TQs from BrP, 381 tags were made at the end of the phrase, and 138 tags in the middle of the phrase. As for the intonation of the TQs in BrP, the results showed that the subjects tend to predominantly use the rising contour. Thus, the rising contour happened with greater frequency than the linear or falling contours at the end of TQs in BrP. In regard to the prosodic boundary (pause), dependent variable in BrP, we verified the pauses between the anchor and the tag and the pauses between the anchor and the tag and after the tag. As for the results of the EAL experiment, we verified that Brazilians tend to use rising contour at the end of the TQs in EAL with greater frequency, when compared to linear and falling contours. On the occurrence of pauses in EAL, we verified the TQs in which there was no pause between the anchor and the tag and the TQs in which there was a pause in the position. On the independent variable explicit instruction, there was a difference between rising, falling and linear contours, but there was no difference regarding the application of explicit instruction.

This dissertation is part of the research line Languages and Social Practices of the s Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências da Linguagem (PPCL) da Universidade do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte (UERN), dialogues with the postcolonial critical theory. Postcolonial studies address the empire-colony interactions that are established from the pre-colonial period to the current post-colonized communities; the consequences arising from this relationship and how the literature reflects this period. This study seeks to analyze the book Heart of Darkness (1899) by Joseph Conrad (1857 – 1924) which tells the story of Captain Marlow on his trip to Congolese territory to find Kurtz, an ivory collector who traveled to Africa and never returned. The plot develops around colonialist exploitation. Through the narrative it is possible to observe the violence towards the natives, the context in which the work was written, the power relations and the way in which Africa and England are presented. This analysis develops from the following research questions: How does the work relate to the African colonial period? How does Conrad's narrative address the themes of culture, identity and alterity? How does colonialism interfere in the construction of the identity of the characters in the novel? How are the aspects that constitute the subject in literature and their relationship with culture and with the other in the work constructed? Thus, as a general objective, we seek to analyze how the Conradian narrative develops, as well as its characters, demonstrating the contribution of its literature to the questioning of representation in the colonialist process and its consequences. This research is predominantly based on theories of postcolonial studies by Spivak (2010), Ella Shohat (2006), Bonnici (1998, 2005, 2012), Said (1995), Mudimbe (2015). From a methodological point of view, the research is constructed from a qualitative and interpretive analysis. Preliminary results point to an imperialist vision in which Africa and its natives are seen as inferior and subjugated in the work. Such a perspective is in line with a Eurocentric view, still hegemonic, through which the world is apprehended through the bias of Western dominance.

This research starts from the hypothesis that, although inserted in seemingly different contexts, the protagonists Anne Shirley, from the work Anne of Green Gables, by Canadian L. M. Montgomery, and Capitu, from the novel Dom Casmurro, by Brazilian Machado de Assis, display considerable similarities as female literary characters. It questions which aspects and stereotypes of female representation can be identified in both of them. The objective of this dissertation is to individually analyze the protagonists in their respective works and contexts, identifying and describing their characteristics, with the feminist literary criticism as foundation. After that, it aims to comparatively analyze the two of them, in order to identify how they are similar or divergent in their adhesion and/or ruptures with female characters’ stereotypes, which permeate the literary canon. In order to achieve its goals, the research will use the ideas of the feminist movement, which, in short, fights for the end of woman’s oppression and discrimination, as well as that of ethnic, social, sexual, and racial minorities. Considering that feminism has entered sectors of society such as the academic one and, as a consequence, sociological and literary studies, it is in concepts proposed by these that this research grounds itself. Its analyses are guided by the strand of feminist literary criticism which focuses on the production and reception of literary works by women, taking into consideration their different experiences in a society that represses, oppresses, and discriminates them. The north of this research is the branch of this criticism which studies the representation of female figures as literary characters, analyzing the social, historical, and cultural contexts in which the story was written, and not depending on the sex of its author. It has a descriptive and explanatory nature, having made bibliographic researches and qualitative analyses, which in some cases contradicted themselves. Moreover, as bibliographic research, it used texts by Alves and Pitanguy (1985), Beauvoir (2009), Donovan (2006) and hooks (2015) on the feminist movement; by Butler (1990), Confortin (2003) and Scott (1990) on questions of gender; and by Alós e Oliveira (2021), Queiroz (1997), Showalter (2004) and Zolin (2009) on feminist literary criticism. As a means of contextualization, it used biographies of the corpus’s authors, Montgomery’s being by Kjelle (2005), and Assis’ by Martino (2015). Texts such as Bacchi’s (1982) on feminism in Canada, D’Incao’s (2004) on bourgeoise woman in Brazil, Perrot’s (2007) on women’s history, and Ribeiro’s (1996) on female characters by Assis have also been used. As a result, it was observed that both Anne and Capitu in some moments adhere to the patterns that dictate woman’s behavior and existence in the society of the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. Concomitant and paradoxically, in other moments they break these patterns, as well as with stereotypes and images that revolve around the female literary figure. Because of its qualitative nature, the research does not allow a universal conclusion, but it ratifies the hypothesis that the characters display substantial similarities, in both their adherence and ruptures with the pattern, despite their apparent differences.

The present study analyzes the theme of marriage in Pride and Prejudice (1813), by Jane Austen. We proposed an investigation of the work and two of its translations into Brazilian Portuguese from the perspective of Corpus Linguistics. Our main objective was to investigate the use of the word marriage in this work and its translations, having as specific objectives to carry out an analysis of the translation strategies used by the translators and proceed with a study based on Corpus Stylistics on the research terms. As a theoretical basis we used SARDINHA (2004), FISHER-STARCKE (2010) to address Corpus Linguistics , CHESTERMAN (1997), MUNDAY (2016) and STEWART (2010) to address aspects of Translations Studies related to Translation and Literature and COPELAND; MCMASTER (1997), JOHNSON; TUITE (2009 ) and TODD (2006) in order to address aspects of Jane Austen’s work. We obtained results related to semantic prosody and Corpus Stylistics during the exploration of the research with the WordSmith Tools 6.0 (SCOTT) software. After proceeding with the analysis of the terms married and marriage, which were the most relevant in our study, we considered the results for the negative, neutral and positive semantic prosody. As well as the author’s writing style based on the stylistic analysis.

This research is included in the field of Discourse Analysis (DA) from a French perspective in the light of the contributions of Michel Foucault regarding the studies of discourse and knowledge-power and resistance relationships. In that prism, The objective of this research is to analyze the ethical constitution that permeates the discourses about the black subject in knowledge/power relations in the statements of Instagram profiles, above all, in relation to Black Lives Matter, which is a campaign against violence directed at black people and racial discrimination issues. This way, we will have as a central question: “How does the ethical constitution of black subjects occur in social media, given the intrinsic knowledge-power relationship that permeates them?”. Initially, we portray the history of DA and its categories of analysis, followed by an approach on race, structural racism, blackness, place of speech and intersectionality. Regarding methodological procedures, we perceive that the research belongs to the qualitative method of bibliographic character, interpretive and criticalas well as the archaeological method, because they work with the mechanisms that help in the construction of meaning effects of the posts made on the Instagram social network. So, we chose to work on categories such as: "discourse", “discursive formation”, “discursive memory”, “statement”, “Power and Resistance” and “ethics”. We will have as corpus 08 posts, which bring verbal and image statements taken exclusively from Instagram, and that circulate in the virtual media. Regarding the results, we perceive that the ethical constitution of black subjects considered from the point of view of knowledge-power relations still undergoes several reformulations, and that happens, principally, by the hate discourses and structural racism that affect the lives of these subjects over the course of centuries. In addition, we found that, through the media, specifically the digital, these bodies demonstrate empowerment and resistance, fighting against racism and formulating anti-racist discourses. Thus, we can consider that despite oppression and violence, the black subject emerges proud of his skin and occupies a social position as a spokesperson for the resistance.

With a view to investigating the political-religion relationship in the practices of the extreme right in contemporary Brazil, this research takes a look at the Christian fundamentalist discourse in the Bolsonaro Government and the effects of power materialized in this conjuncture. We perceive, in the current political context, a recurrence to the religious fundamentalist discourse that results in radical discourses and practices and that move conceptions of the world based on Christian morality for political exercise. A narrative is constructed that aims to universalize its notions of good and bad, of good and evil, for society, producing a discourse that manifests an exclusionary will for truth and mobilizes a project to guide the country's paths in accordance with its beliefs and values. Therefore, the use of discursive strategies that meet their interests is too significant, since there is a mutual benefit in this context: if, on the one hand, politics uses Christian morality as a strategic tool to occupy spaces and exercise power, on the other hand, a population, whose overwhelming majority has Christianity as the foundation of their values, can feel welcomed. Above all, that conservative portion that wants to have their faith as primacy to establish a standardization of conduct and political action. Indeed, such practices pose a risk to democracy, insofar as they aim to take rights, which seeks to challenge plural freedom and multiplicity of thought. The conception of these assumptions led us to advance the idea that there is a need to investigate the functioning of mechanisms and strategies that materialize the Christian fundamentalist discourse in contemporary Brazil. For this reason, this work has the general objective of analyzing the conditions for the possibility of the emergence of Christian fundamentalist discourses in the Brazilian political scenario conveyed by Twitter. More specifically, we aim to describe how a Christian fundamentalist rationality is constituted and materialized in the political-religion relationship in Brazil today; investigate the exercise of power and pastoral technologies in the practices of the Bolsonaro Government; and, finally, point out how practices that have the effect of compromising the exercise of democracy are inscribed in the analyzed statements. To underpin our research prism, we base ourselves on Foucaultian Discursive Studies arising from the contributions of Michel Foucault (2017; 2021) for discourse analysis, which has archaeogenealogy as a theoretical-methodological lens. We selected from the archive, for the elaboration of our corpus, utterances conveyed by Bolsonarists politicians on the digital platform Twitter, in the period from 2018 to 2022, that mobilize the religious political discursive crossing. Therefore, in the analyses, we will work mainly on the following categories: discursive formation, regimes of truth, rationality, pastoral power. Our analyzes point out that the religious resentment provoked by the death of God (modernity) gives conditions of possibility to fundamentalist discourses in the performance of the Bolsonaro Government. On the other hand, fundamentalist rationality has as effect of power, the exercise of technologies of pastoral power, enabling the establishment of a Bolsonarist pastorate, which aims to designate adequate or abject social conduct based on Christian dogmas and through public intuitions.

This dissertation is inserted in the Discourse Analysis area with emphasis on Michel Foucault’s contributions to the discourse studies and the subjectivity production. It aims to analyze the effects of the socio-educational practices at the Provisional Socio-educational Service Center – CASEP West/Mossoró-RN, on the subject that is produced there from the exercise of power. Our Hypothesis, in the case of socio-educational practices applied to adolescents accused of an infraction, considers the existence of a device through which we can reflect on socio-educational and the production of the subject in this system. To develop this research we elected the following guiding question: How does the power act in the production of the subject in a socio-educational process at CASEP West? The analysis will focus on the relationship between the norm and disciplinary practices within the institution and their effects on the socio-educational process. The elements of the corpus will comprise the Statute of the Child and Adolescent – ECA, The National System of Socio-Educational Assistance – SINASE, the Political Pedagogical Project (PPP) of West CASEP, the Internal Regulations of Socio-Educational Units – State Ordinance No. 250/2019-GP, the Brazilian Penal Execution Law – LEP, the Institution’s Occurrence Books, posts on the official FUNDASE Facebook page and news published on websites. From a methodological point of view, this research refers to Foucauldian’s arqueogenealogy to analyze the process of subjectivation that takes place, through disciplinary power (2004) and Biopower (2005, 2008), from the socio-educational practices applied at the institution WEST CASEP with adolescents in deprivation of liberty. The analyzes showed that the practices in the socio-educational institution are similar to the practices used in prision and may be responsible for the existing dissymmetry between the socio-educational guidelines, materialized in documents that guide the SINASE policy, the ECA principles, and the practices of the socio-educational institutions.

This study falls under the research line Estrutura e Funcionamento da Linguagem, from the Programa de Pós-graduação em Ciências da Linguagem (PPCL), at Universidade do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte (UERN) and focuses on the theme of verbal irony in electoral debates. Based on this, the following research questions were formulated: how and with what intention do politicians use irony in electoral debates? And how does irony affect the face of the enunciator politician? The general objective of this study is to analyze ironic statements uttered in electoral political debates and their influence on the enunciator's face. In order to reach the general objective, the following specific objectives were elaborated: 1. Identify how irony occurs in politicians' speeches in electoral debates; 2. Verify the intention of the enunciators when using irony in their speeches; 3. Identify how the use of ironic statements affects the speaker’s face in the electoral debate. The theoretical framework on which this study is based consists mainly of the assumptions of Sociocultural Pragmatics (BRAVO and BRIZ, 2004), of (Im)Politeness Theory (BROWN and LEVINSON, 1978; BRAVO, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2008; KAUL DE MARLANGEON, 2005), and of Irony (GRICE, 2005; RUIZ GURILLO and GRIALE Group, 2009). The corpus consists of two electoral debates with candidates for the presidency of the Spanish government in 2019. From a methodological point of view, this research is exploratory, with a qualitative approach. The results obtained show that, in electoral debates, candidates predominantly use irony as an impoliteness strategy with a negative social effect for the enunciator, which generates an impoliteness facework and thus negatively affects the speaker's face.

Taking the field of the arts as a sphere of manifestation and propagation of knowledge, this research focuses on the artistic-musical discourse in its political dimension, problematizing the voices that emerge from songs of the international pop genre and questioning their effects of meaning in contemporary society. Derived from a knowledge of equality, based on the achievement of some rights by women, the research aims to investigate the manifestations of musical language in its denunciative and political character. Therefore, our goal is to analyze, in the artistic manifestations of international pop gender performed by woman, how They make a discursive critic, making emerge a discontinuity in the ways of feminine representation and subjectivation. At the same time, it is also intended to investigate how bodies react to manifestations of power, in the sense of, how they resist, oppose and disobey androcentric principles, giving rise to female representations that are different from those produced by male hands. For this purpose, eight songs were chosen, selected from a delimitation of statements arranged in the contemporary feminism archive, dated from 2010 to 2021 and of different authorship. The songs are: The Man, by Taylor Swift; If I Were a Boy, by Beyoncé; Woman's World, by the group Little Mix; Ain't Your Mama, by Jennifer Lopez; Woman, by Kesha; Flawless (feat. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie), by Beyoncé; Most Girls by Hailee Steinfeld and Build a Bitch by Bella Poarch. The choice of these songs for the composition of the corpus is justified by the contrast they demonstrate between men and women in society, denouncing disciplinary practices that aim to make female bodies docile in the way they express their feelings and emotions, as well as in the way they dress and behave. Theoretically and methodologically linked to Foucauldian Discursive Studies, this research is based on the writings of Michel Foucault (2004, 2011, 2014a, 2014b, 2020a, 2020b, 2021). In order to undertake an investigation that focuses on power-knowledge relations, we carried out an archeogenealogy, analyzing the verbal materialities of the lyrics of the songs, taking them as statements. In such manner, the French thinker's contributions will be in dialogue with other studies, marking the transdisciplinary character of this research, which establishes a dialogue with the human and social sciences. Thus, authors such as Pierre Bourdieu (2015) and feminist theorists such as Margaret McLaren (2016), Michele Perrot (2019), Margaret Rago (2013), Angela Davis (2016), bell hooks (2019, 2020), among others who deal with pop culture, such as Janotti Júnior (2006, 2015) and Soares (2015), are fundamental to the discussion developed. With this undertaking, we aim to explain the unequal yoke present in contemporary society, in order to verify and attest to the exercise of sexist and oppressive practices historically, socially and culturally constructed, which aim to subjugate women and diminish them. More precisely, through the selected songs, we aim at how female subjects produce a discursive critique, giving rise to a discontinuity in the modes of female representation and subjectivation. The results, which make explicit the feminist role even in the face of the exercise of sexism and interdiction practices today, point to female resistance – in the most diverse dimensions, public and private – linked to a self-care technique, characterized by us as a song of the self, in an update of Foucauldian categories.

This study aims to analyze the decolonial traits of the work A cor da ternura (2017), by the writer Geni Mariano Guimarães, pointing out her contribution in the literary study to discuss the protagonism through the character Geni, who transcends from childhood, to adolescence and into adulthood. For this purpose, this research is divided into three parts, namely: the first is a more accurate study of the theory that encompasses decoloniality and feminism; the second, focused on literary aspects, surveys black Brazilian female authors who were precursors of the writer, in order to understand the winding path that black women have traced in Afro-Brazilian literature; and, finally, an interpretative analysis of the character Geni in the work A cor da ternura (2017), discussing aspects of her precocious protagonism developed from childhood, presenting decolonial thoughts and attitudes through her protagonism until the beginning of the adult phase, paying attention to to the autofictional aspects of the work. To this end, a bibliographical study and an interpretation of critical analysis were scrutinized that investigated the necessary contribution to foster and consolidate this research, in which we cite some replicators of the subject that were fundamental for the structuring of this work: in literary theory Augel (2011, 2021), Bernd (1988), Bonnici and Zolin (2019), Dalcastagnè (2005, 2008), Duarte (2009, 2011, 2013, 2014), Evaristo (2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2020); in decolonialism in Bernardino-Costa, Maldonado-Torres and Grosfoguel (2020), Gomes (2020), González (2020), Hollanda (2020), Kilomba (2019, 2020), and in feminism Hooks (2014), Collins (2016, 2020) , Oyêwùmí (2020). Based on these subsidies, an interpretation of critical analysis was carried out for this argument that intends to add to other existing research with the purpose of strengthening the literature of female and black Brazilian authorship, disseminating and praising the literary work of these black women who fought and fight to become seen and appreciated within a culture that still persists in female and black exclusion.

The study of the deictic referential process and its discursive functions can bring contributions to the most varied discourses, among them the literary one. In this perspective, based on this research, we sought to investigate how the referential process of deixis occurs, through its discursive functions, in Machado de Assis' short stories. Therefore, some questions guided this work, among them: a) how does the deictic referential process occur in Machado de Assis' short stories? b) how do social deixis and its discursive functions contribute to the argumentative orientation in Machado's writings? To clarify these questions, the short stories present in the work Papéis Avulsos, by Machado de Assis, were gathered. This collection consists of 12 of the author's main short stories, which were essential, at first, to get to know Machado's short narrative and to analyze the interference of the social deictic and its discursive functions present in the work. In this scope, as a matter of analytical approach, it was decided to work with only 6 short stories. The criterion used for this choice was given by those who most presented this type of deixis, serving as a basis for the development of the analysis. For this purpose, some authors who researched these aspects became fundamental for obtaining the results achieved, among them, we can mention Cavalcante (2018), Ciulla e Silva (2008), Sá (2007), Koch (2004) and Gancho (2002), in addition to others that were also relevant in this work. In methodological terms, the research has a descriptive approach, of an interpretativequalitative nature, responsible for better defining the methodology followed in the course of this study. Finally, based on the results obtained throughout the work, it was found that the deictic referential process, especially the social deictic, and its discursive functions contributed significantly to the understanding of Machado de Assis' short stories, with its explanation being fundamental to readers of the author and students from different levels of schooling.

The discursive genres emerging from the digital environment have become increasingly present in society’s daily life. Although the use of digital media is a recommendation from the BNCC, it is notorious the gaps that remain about using these tools as environments for elaborating statements and as a tool for teaching textual cohesion. From this perspective, the present work aims to investigate how the anaphoric referential process contributes to the weaving of meanings in posts from the pages Haddad Debochado and Mídia Ninja on the social network Twitter. Based on the assumptions of Textual Linguistics, especially concerning the proposal of Referentiation, we seek to answer the following research question: how does the anaphoric referential process, as a linguistic resource, contribute to the weaving of meanings in posts from the Haddad Debochado and Mídia Ninja pages from the social network Twitter? To reflect on the question at hand, 38 (thirty-eight) publications were selected between December 2022 and January 2023, available on the page Haddad Debochado, whose electronic address is https://twitter.com/HaddadDebochado, and Mídia Ninja available on https://twitter.com/MidiaNINJA, both on the social network Twitter. From this corpus, will be selected posts during the research to compose the analysis and highlight the phenomenon of referencing through anaphora. To this end, the methodological procedures adopted fit into the qualitative and descriptive research studies. Regarding the classification of the technical methods used, this study belongs to the bibliographic and documentary research. To enrich the discussions of the themes addressed in this work, we mainly use Koch's (2020) studies on Textual Linguistics and the notion of text as a theoretical framework; Koch and Elias (2008), Cavalcante (2011, 2014), and Sá (2014), in the discussion on referenciation and the anaphoric processes discussed in the analysis of this work; In addition, the research by Ciulla and Silva (2008) and Sá (2014) supported us on the discursive functions of anaphora. In conclusion, based on the analytical results obtained throughout this work, we found in the corpus of this research that only five of the six classifications proposed by Ciulla and Silva (2008) emerged in our analysis. We justify this fact by reaffirming that the function of aesthetic-stylistic effects usually appears in texts of the literary genre, as the author points out. According to the posts analyzed, the cognitivediscursive function presented is heterogeneous, with the marking of discursive heterogeneity being the most recurrent in the corpus of this research.

This master’s thesis has as general objective to analyze the translation strategies of the neologisms created by the American writer George R. R. Martin. Such lexical creations are present in the works of fantastic literature that make up the series of books in the English language A Song of Ice and Fire (A Song of Ice and Fire). The specific objectives are: to find the neologisms of the study corpus in question in their source language, which is English, using Corpus Linguistics (BERBER SARDINHA, 2004; MCENERY; WILSON, 2001; TAGNIN, 2015), with the help of software for linguistic analysis in corpora Wordsmith Tools 8.0 (SCOTT, 2021); categorize the author's lexical creations from the English language based on the linguistic processes that form them (STEINBERG, 2003); as well as identifying the procedures or techniques used when translating their correspondents in the Portuguese language version (NEWMARK, 1988) and (BEDNARSKA, 2015); and analyze how the neologisms were formed and how their translations were configured, observing the linguistic processes of creation and the procedures and techniques of translation. The processes by which each of the 170 neologisms was created were categorized. Then, classification was performed according to the type of translation procedure or technique. Finally, detailed analyzes of how the translations of the 20 most frequent neologisms within the corpus were configured. It can be highlighted that in the categorization of neologisms, the most frequent linguistic processes of neological creation were Composition, Graphic Neologism and Affixation. Regarding the types of translation procedure or technique, the most frequent were Target language neologism/Neological creation and Recognized target language translation. At the conclusion of this research, we have the following finding: the results found in the analyses, as they made it possible to understand how the neologisms created by the author are translated.

On the old grammatical compendium of the normative perspective, it was advocated that the pronominal subject is already sufficiently indicated by the verbal endings. Because of this, many grammarians conceived the fulfillment of this syntactic function as a linguistic construction to be avoided. Moving away from this proposal, from 1995 onwards, authors emerged in Brazil, such as Eugênia Duarte, seeking to demonstrate the hypothesis that filling in the pronominal subject, in addition to being linguistically and extra linguistically motivated, is increasingly recurrent in the talk about cultured people. For this reason, after more than twenty years, it is pertinent to analyze the behavior of the pronominal subject. Resorting to variationist sociolinguistics, this is, therefore, the general objective of this work. To be achieved, the following questions are specifically addressed: has the linguistic research on this linguistic phenomenon been observed by the grammatical tradition? Does normative grammar continue to conceive subject completion as something to prevent? What are the implications arising from the possible rejection of the pronominal subjectfilling mechanism? Answering scientifically to these questions constitutes, therefore, the foundation objective of this research. To this end, a bibliographical analysis carried out of three normative works in which there are studies on the fulfillment of the pronominal subject based on the foundations proposed by Bagno (2012), Castilho (2019), Duarte (1995), Perini (2007), among others, namely: Bechara (2015), Cunha and Cintra (2017), and Rocha Lima (2011). With this investigation, we sought to answer, under the methodological assumptions of qualitative bibliographic research, the previously listed questions regarding the knowledge of using the pronoun in the subject position as a coherent and motivated linguistic process. As for the results, it was possible to give answers to the questions outlined at the north of this work. Therefore, we concluded that the grammatical tradition still relegates more than twenty years of research dedicated to the mechanism of subject completion through pronouns to the extent as it continues to treat this phenomenon as an unnecessary repetition. In addition, it was possible to realize that this rejection comes mainly from the negative conception regarding the phenomenon of linguistic change, as well as from the resistance of normative grammar to admit that, due to the predominant filling of the subject, the system of inflection and the current framework of pronouns have simplified in Brazilian Portuguese. In this way, it was possible not only to conceptually redimension the phenomenon of filling the subject but also to understand the reasons that permeate the still existing negativity about this process of linguistic change.

Language teaching has undergone several changes until the present day. In this logic, we currently live in a multimodal society, built from verbal and imagery language. Texts are constantly improving their structure, starting to be constructed not only through words, but with the presence of visual elements that are usually part of meanings. So, considering that the textbook still has a crucial role in the planning of classes, the present research has as problematic question: How are the multisemiotic resources available in the didactic material, are such resources integrated in order to favor the learning of multimodality? Linked to the general objective of analyzing the multisemiotic resources and their possibilities - representational, interactive and compositional of a collection of textbooks for the final years of elementary school, named as english and more. And the specific objectives are to discourse the multimodality, social semiotics and Grammar of Visual Design regarding the use of its elements in teaching materials; to identify multisemiotic aspects in the textbook for english language teaching and its possible integration with the proposed activities; to evaluate the relationship between the multisemiotic elements in textbooks, as a proposal for the english language teaching focused on multimodal. Based on an interpretative qualitative research and supported by the theories of Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006), Kress (2011), Van Leeuwen (2011), Dionisio (2007), Vieira (2015), among others, regarding the concept of multimodality, social semiotics and Grammar of Visual Design. Regarding teaching materials, based on the theories of Almeida Filho (2007), Bandeira (2009), Paiva (2009), Dias (2009), among others. We carried out an analysis to verify if these books present multisemiotic aspects in the opening activities of the units. The data have shown that prevail the such as multisemiotic resources integrated with activity issues and the construction of multiple representational, interactive and compositional meanings interconnected in imagery elements. In this way, some suggestions for multimodal teaching suggest that teachers expand their knowledge about the multiple ways of analysis multisemiotic resources and promote strategic activities of reading imagery means.

This work presents a critical analysis about the poetry book The Days Run Away Like Wild Horses Over the Hills, written by the North-American author Charles Bukowski, published originally in 1969. Inside his verses, it is possible to observe criticisms of the urban environment as well as American society at the time. Surrounding an emphasis on criticism of the city, we aimed to analyze how urban criticism is carried out in Bukowski's lyric, demonstrating how the city is depicted in his poems as a synonym for problems of social, environmental, cultural, personal and economic topics. For this, authors from different areas of study, such as Philosophy, Sociology, and Geography, among others, who had a specific focus at the city, were reviewed, including Bauman (2009), Berman (1986), Bradbury (1989), Lefebvre (2001), Lynch (1999), and Harvey (2008), thus, giving the research a transversal character. To analyze the literary aspects, authors such as Friedrich (1978), Melo Neto (1997), Paz (1993), High (1986), Gray (2012), and Beach (2003) were used. Therefore, the analysis allowed us to observe how the Bukowskian lyric manages to be contemporary, even though it was produced in the first decades of the second half of the previous millennium, as it presents scathing criticism of the American society of the time, having as its scope the urban environment of the city of Los Angeles. Therefore, by producing a representation of the city in the literary area, Charles Bukowski exposes a pessimistic and degrading view of the city as a stronghold of social problems.

Through several socio-historical factors, the English language has been highlighted in various social practices, strengthening the idea of a standard language as a means of global interaction. As consequence of this, learning the English language has become a great ally for consumption in the current context, supported by advertisements for English courses that circulate on social media, more specifically on the Instagram feed. Based on these notes, we consider the following question: How do English teaching advertisements on Instagram multimodally discuss the use of the language as a consumer product? Therefore, the research aims to critically and multimodally analyze the discourses in advertisements that circulate on Instagram that induce consumption. Furthermore, with this purpose, the specific objectives sought to (i) identify the ideological-hegemonic discourses present in advertisements for English courses on Instagram; (ii) integrate verbal-imagery aspects into the criticality of English advertising posts on Instagram; and, (iii) analyze (from a transformational perspective of discourse) how ideological-hegemonic meanings are constructed in advertising posts for English courses. This work is supported by the studies of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), according to Fairclough (2001; 2003), with dialectics-relational as its main aspect. This theoretical-methodological approach made it possible to include other theoretical bases to support criticality, such as the concept of ideology, by Thompson (2011) and the conception of hegemony, in agreement with Gramsci (1988; 1995). For analytical support in critical-multimodal reading, we will resort to the postulates of Visual Design Grammar (GDV), developed by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006), since it was based on Halliday's Systemic-Functional Linguistics (1994). Regarding the discussion about English language, we investigated research that points to the language as an international phenomenon, according to Pennycook (1994) and Crystal (2003), as well as domination and power, according to Morais (2005) and Rajagopalan (2005). As for the methodological process, this research has a qualitative-interpretivist approach, since the Textually Oriented Discourse Analysis (ADTO) of Fairclough (2003) and the other bases mentioned above are used as a method. Regarding the corpus, it is composed of ten advertisements chosen based on the mention of the following words: fluency, values, “natives” and success, understood as strategies. With this, we highlight a discourse that instigates an awakening in the learning of the English language, using ideological and hegemonic meanings that intensify the sovereignty of the language and all that are in synchrony with the culture of the language. Therefore, advertisements contain verbal and non-verbal elements in their construction to approach and convince the consumer of this proposal. So, we conclude that english course advertisements maintain an intrinsic structure between semiotic elements and transformational modes of discourse. In each advertisement, the author highlights his own worldview, discourse and identity, making clear his ideology and hegemony over the language.

This work aims to multimodal-critically analyze posters of the anti-vaccine movement in the United States that deny science regarding vaccination in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, it was necessary to understand the theoreticalmethodological approach of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Fairclough (2003), in addition to the contributions of Thompson (1995) and Gramsci (1988) to support studies of negationists ideological-hegemonic aspects in the genre poster, paying attention to the discourse and its entities; in addition, Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2021) Grammar of Visual Design (GVD) was used to support the description and imagery analysis of the corpus. Given the current global context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the difficulties faced in several countries regarding immunization through vaccines, as well as strengthening of the anti-vaccine movement in the United States; ten posters were selected from different US news websites in the period starting in May 2020 until January 2022. Aiming at social change through discursive change, a multimodalcritical discursive analysis of this material was carried out based on the analytical categories of the CDA and GVD. As a result, it is concluded that the discursive genre could be identified as a protest poster, and that in all ten posters, ideologicalhegemonic marks consistent with the scientific denialist discourse were identified. It is expected that, through the investigation of how the negationist ideological-hegemonic discourse, conveyed in posters of the anti-vaccination movement in the United States, is multimodally textualized to deny science in relation to vaccination; that this research contributes both to critical discourse studies as well as to the area of multimodality.

José Geraldo Vieira’s literature approached moral questions, being in this his most striking characteristic. However, it seems to surpass the borders of introspection, going beyond the psychological dimension, exposing circumstances external to the subjective scope and touching, tacitly, social spheres. Starting from this notion, the scope of the present study is the construction of the fictional character Lúcia in the modernist novel “A mulher que fugiu de Sodoma”. We considered the vector of biblical influence expressed in this intimist literary representation and a framing of the feminine figure through the illustration of its social role. Qualitative and bibliographical, the research employs an inductive analysis method. We started with a brief outline about the constitution of Modernism paying attention to the main characteristics of the movement. We discussed then the “Romance of 30” in the particular context of Brazilian modern fiction, highlighting its two aesthetic-thematic tendencies. Following usual distinctions between a neorealist fiction of critic orientation and an instimist fiction of catholic content, we give a panoramic view of the modernist José Geraldo Vieira’s literary production, which is classified in this second category. We dealt, in sequence, with the literary elements of the Judeo-Christian Bible and with the echoes of its narratives in secular literature, showing case examples. In the face of indications of biblical influence in “A mulher que fugiu de Sodoma”, we aimed at image and linguistic components poured from Genesis 19 in the novelistic narrative. In interface of traditional and feminist thoughts, we reviewed, later, the historical and cultural conditions of women in patriarchy, highlighting their restrictions and limitations, still paying attention to the conception of marriage as a monogamous lifelong contract conditioning of feminine position. In this sense, we examined the literary character’s profile in the novel plot. We deduced that the character Lúcia’s portrait it’s built from the allegory evolving the term “escape”, and that its image reflects typological conduct and behavior, for she is idealized having moral traces and attitudes inspired in those of the biblical character Lot, being in this point archetypal. In addition, we confirmed that Lúcia is also an entity executor of a social task, as she represents the woman in spousal function and simulates, therefore, the drama of marital dissidence.

This research aims to carry out a comparative analysis of the verbal politeness expressed in Spanish by a Brazilian and an Argentinian, based on the interview given to Spanish teacher Sergi Martin, available on his YouTube channel entitled Sergi Martin Spanish. The specific objectives undertaken here are: a) to classify the type of verbal politeness present in the interview with the Brazilian and the Argentinian; b) to describe the typology of verbal politeness; c) to compare the positive and negative politeness used by the interviewees, taking into account gender and cultural differences and d) to transcribe through the system called Val.Es.Co which symbols of this system are present in the speech of the Brazilian and the Spaniard. The research has as its theoretical basis the work carried out by Leech (1983) on the maxims of politeness, the work of Brown and Levinson (1987) on negative and positive verbal politeness, the work of Bravo (2001) on sociocultural pragmatics and verbal politeness and the work of Searle (1994) on speech acts. This research is a case study with a qualitative approach. It is also explanatory and descriptive. The corpus of this work is made up of statements made by the Brazilian and the Argentinian during the interview. As a result of the analysis, it was possible to see that Brazilian Dayane predominantly used positive verbal politeness. In the speeches of the Argentine Sergio, positive verbal politeness also predominated and only in two specific moments was negative verbal politeness used.

When we seek to understand how the construction of women's role in the social sphere takes place, it becomes necessary to go through historical and temporal periods. Women have long occupied secondary roles in the social hierarchy, especially in relation to men. Literature is a cultural and artistic form of representation of reality, that is, it is how society organizes itself, bringing with it historical contexts of social transformations, memories and the formation of identities. When we analyze the male and female role in society, we notice great differences between the genders, mainly the inferiority of the female figure through literary texts investigating the past and the path taken by the female figure to the present day. The author José de Alencar brings in his urban novel, ''Lucíola'', as Maria da Glória was known, a young girl who is expelled from home by her father after getting involved with a man, driven by the standards of patriarchy, she loses her space at home and starts prostitution to survive. The work/novel “A Doce Canção de Caetana”, the post-modern author, Nélida Piñon brings the story of a lame actress who seeks to leave behind her life as a prostitute to fulfill a dream, winning the main role in a play theater being Maria Callas. The work was published in 1987, a time when Brazil was experiencing a dictatorial period, that is, it was an even more repressive Brazil. Our work is theoretically supported by Alencar (2011), Foucault (2006), Piñon (1997), Ribeiro (1956), Xavier (2007), among others. This present research has a bibliographic and qualitative character, considering that this modality is characterized by a bibliographic survey, therefore, we developed a study based on the reading of theoretical references about feminism in literature, in literary narratives, specifically researching about the construction of the social conduct of the characters/courtesans ''Lucíola'' by José de Alencar and ''Caetana'' by Nélida Piñon.

The variable phenomenon of relativization has been studied in Brazil since the 1970s, with the pioneering research of Mollica (1977). Despite that, little research has been undertaken in the state of Ceará regarding relativization strategies. The few existing ones are restricted to the capital of Ceará, so we did not find any research that focused on the phenomenon under discussion in the countryside of the state. Thus, with the aim of alleviating a gap in studies focused on relativization strategies in the countryside of Ceará, this study aims to present an analysis of the linguistic and extralinguistic factors that condition the variable phenomenon of relativization in the context of prepositioned phrases in spoken Portuguese in Canindé - CE. Through sociolinguistic interviews of the DID type (Dialogue between Informant and Documenter), carried out with 36 informants from Canindé - CE, stratified according to gender (male and female), age group (I- 18 to 29 years old, II- 30 to 49 years old and III- 50 years old onwards) and with education (A- Elementary Education, B- Secondary Education, CUniversity Education), 230 occurrences of relative clauses were catalogued, namely: 18 relative copiers (7.8%), 19 standard relative (8.3%) and 193 cutter relative (83.9%). Through statistical treatment carried out with the aid of the computer software Jamovi (version 2.3), using a significance level of 0.05, in the chi-square test, for the selection of significant independent variables, it was observed that the phenomenon variable of relativization, in Canindé - CE, is conditioned only by linguistic factors. Due to the considerable prevalence of occurrences of relative cutters in the speech of young people, it is concluded that there is, in the speech community analyzed, a possible change underway in favor of the cutter variant.

Science and the press were extremely importante in migrating the effects of Covid-19 not only in Brazil, but thoughout the world. This occured though na intense articulation of what scientist were discovering about this new disease and the press publicitized it so that the populatio knew how to protect themselves from it. Thinking about this atitude of the press, this work, liked to the Research line Languages and Social Practices, of the Postgradute Program in Language Science at the State University of Rio Grande do Norte (UERN), has as its theme: multimodal analysis of magazine covers Veja it during the Covid-19 pandemic. We will investigate how the three metafunctions of the Grammar of Visual Design by Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006) are used in this journalistic genre in order to convince the reader about the positioning of Science and the magazine in relation to the fight against the the Covid-19 pandemic. This is because there were people who did not believe in the seriousness of this disease, such as the former presidente of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro for financial reasons. His justification was that trade did not need to stop because not all people developed the severe stage of this new diesease. Howere, due to the uncertainty regarding the evolution of covid-19 in people according to their health conditions, the World Health Organization understood that it would be best to recomemmend, to the various governments around the world, restrictions on movement. Of people so that there would not be na increase in contagion due to this new disease among the world population. This ended up being accepted by several politicians around the world but with some exceptions who dedided to attack Science instead of obeying it. In view of this, this work seeks to verify how multisemiotic resources produce interactive, modal and compositional Meaning on the covers of Veja produce interactive, modal and compositional meanings on the covers of Veja magazine on the topic of the Covid-19 pandemic with the aim of reinforcing scientific discourse to the determent of those who did not believe in Science. This Research has two aspects: the first is quantitative, which sought to understand the universe of Veja magazine publicatins on Covid-19 during the years 2020 ande 2021. The Second is qualitative, interpretative, seeking to understand how multimodal resources impacted the scientific approach of Covid-19 on the covers of Veja magazine so that Brazilians would believe in what Science suggested as a solution to combal Sars-cov 2. It is Worth hghligting that throuth this Project we will expos esme covers to serve as examples in approaching the metafunctions of GDV. However, we will select the six most significant layers that best represent each GDV metafunction to be synthetically exposed to the analysis of the corpus of this Research. The justifications for the six covers are below them. This is so that reader of Veja magazine knows the theory and practive of these multiple languages in the construction of the argumentative defense of this textual genre that has the charactteristics: journalistic and adverstising at the same time exposed on the cover.

This study has as its main objective to analyze the phonetic detail of the interdental fricatives by Brazilian learners in the construction of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and English as an Additional Language (EAL) interphonology. This research is intended to answer the following research questions: how do Brazilian learners of EAL produce the phonetic detail of the interdental fricatives? What linguistic and extra linguistic elements influence their productions? Grounded on a view of langue as a Complex Adaptive System (CAS) (Larsen-Freeman, 1997; Larsen-Freeman; Cameron, 2008; Beckner et al., 2009; Baicchi, 2015) and on the multiple mental representations of the Exemplar Theory (Bybee, 2001; Pierrehumbert, 2001), we assumed as the main hypothesis that the production of the phonetic detail of the interdental fricatives by Brazilian learners of EAL is influenced by BP homorganic fricatives and stops. This study followed a quantitative, quasi-experimental, cross-sectional and intra-participant design. Data collection involved speech recordings of twelve Brazilian learners of EAL. Subjects were also controlled by EAL proficiency level, divided in two groups: Intermediate and Advanced. Two experiments were used to collect data, named ILA1 and ILA2. ILA1 involved a carrier-sentence reading procedure, while ILA2 involved sentence and images reading procedure in order to control the graphophonic influence. In this research, we analyzed the categorical dependent variable: realization of the interdental fricatives. A gradient analysis of the dependent variables duration of fricatives, Voice Onset Time (VOT), mean and variance has been carried out. The independent variables were: experiments; voicing; phonotactic contexts; language-use experience; the individual; and words. Results indicated 31% prototypical realizations of the interdental fricatives and 69% in non-prototypical realizations. In general, these data support the findings that Brazilian learners of EAL tend to produce the interdental fricatives in a non-prototypical way, replacing θ and ð with BP labiodental fricatives and alveolar stops. Brazilian learners of EAL tend to produce the interdental fricatives in a non-prototypical way in experiments ILA1 and ILA2. Results indicated that voiceless interdental fricative and complex onset favored accurate production. Language-use experience effects have been observed in this research. Additionally, it was found that specific lexical items showed higher or smaller levels of the prototypical realization of interdental fricatives and that each subject follows different construction of BP and EAL interphonology pathways. The duration of the fricative was shown to be a relevant cue to distinguish all three places of articulation. Results indicated significant differences in the VOT between the improper alveolar stop t and full alveolar stop t. Mean and variance from the frication noise and burst for stop consonants allow the classification of places of articulation. Such results reinforce the importance of the acoustic properties from the phonetic detail to the construction of mental representations in the BP and EAL interphonology by Brazilian learners.

The presence of images in discursive genres has given rise, in contemporary times, to research in the area of language under a functionalist bias, extended to the understanding that images matter and mean as much as verbal texts. Linked to this, digital technologies provide an infinite number of possibilities for meaning, using colors, images and other visual structures, which is why the way of reading also develops, motivated by new cultures, along with new languages. It is in this context that multimodality (the study of more than one significant way) is inserted and supports this research, supported by the theory of Multiliteracies. In this sense, we chose to analyze strips, defining as a general objective to investigate how multimodality contributes to debates on gender and race in strips. The comic narratives chosen for this research are titled Dona Isaura, written by Brazilian cartoonist and illustrator Junião, and deal with racial issues linked to gender issues, with a black, feminist lady as the protagonist. Furthermore, it is worth noting that the selection for this research object is confirmed by the simple quantity of master's degree works involving the themes of race and gender in texts of an imagistic nature. Therefore, to analyze our object, we constructed the research through two theoretical-methodological paths: one of visual analysis, to deal with the imagetic materiality of the strip genre, and another focused on the racial and feminist bias, characteristic of the character. In relation to image analysis, we chose the Visual Design Grammar (GDV), by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006), as the main analytical instrument, through the representational metafunction. In line with the contribution of GDV, we established a dialogue between the multimodal format of the texts and the implications and reading skills arising from this integration between verbal language and image, anchoring ourselves in the studies of Multiliteracies, based on Rojo (2009, 2012 ), Rojo and Moura (2019) and Kersch, Coscarelli and Cani (2016). Discussions regarding race and gender dialogue with the studies of Ribeiro (2019), Gonzalez (1988) and Kilomba (2019), black researchers whose research is located in the area of Black Feminism. Considering, therefore, that the grammar of images supports the analysis of multimodal genres, we characterize this study as descriptive, with a qualitative method, whose corpus consists of five strips, divided between racial themes and feminist themes. As results, we found that the verbal-imagery constitution of the genre strip contributes to the black representation of the character, just as the character's critical positions constitute practices of black and female resistance, evidenced through multimodality.

Considering the investigation into the interphonology of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and English as an Additional Language (EAL), this study has the general objective of analyzing the phonetic detail of the realization of alveolar fricatives at the end of words, associated with the plural and third person morpheme -s of verbs by Brazilian EAL learners. When assuming the view of language as a Complex Adaptive System (SAC) (Larsen-Freeman, 1997; Larsen-Freeman; Cameron, 2008; Beckner et al, 2009; Baicchi, 2015) and multiple phonological representations, according to the Exemplars Theory (TE) (Pierrehumbert, 2001; Bybee, 2001), we seek to answer the following research question: how do Brazilian ILA learners perform alveolar fricatives in coda position at the end of word, associated with the plural and the third person of verbs in the present tense of morpheme -s? As a basic hypothesis, we assume that Brazilian EAL learners perform alveolar fricatives in coda position at the end of words, associated with the plural and third-person of present tense verbs of morpheme -s, under the influence of the phenomena of regressive and progressive voicing assimilation (Fragozo, 2017; Zanfra; Silveira, 2020; Mendes-Junior, 2023). This research is characterized as quantitative, quasi-experimental, with an intra-participant and cross-sectional design, involving the participation of ten Brazilian EAL learners, with intermediate and advanced language proficiency levels. Data collection took place through the application of an experiment on reading sentences with meaning in the English language. We considered the analysis of the following dependent variables: the categorical realization of the alveolar fricative; the duration of the vowel preceding the alveolar fricatives; and the duration of the epenthetic and full vowel. The independent variables controlled were preceding segment, following segment, individual, usage experience, words and fricative voicing. The general data showed that participants demonstrated a significant preference for the prototypical realization of the -s morpheme, showing less resistance for the s allomorph in contrast to the z and ɪz allomorphs. In the preceding segment variable, it was found that fricatives preceded by voiceless segments were predominantly voiceless, just as the voicing of the fricative was more frequent when associated with preceding voiced segments. The following segment variable proved to be significant for the voicing of the alveolar fricative, so that following voiced contexts acted as attractors for the voicing of z and ɪz and following unvoiced and pause contexts contributed to their devoicing. With the individual variable, different paths were observed in voicing the morpheme -s. The variable usage experience did not show a significant difference in the realization of the allomorph s between the intermediate and advanced level groups, but it demonstrated that a higher frequency of prototypicality of zand ɪz is related to the advanced level group. In the word variable, it was found that each lexical item acts differently in the development of the morpheme -s voicing. The analysis of the dependent variable duration of the preceding vowel showed a longer duration of the vowel ɪ of the ɪz allomorph when followed by a devoiced fricative. The analysis of the variable duration of the epenthetic and full vowels showed a longer duration of the full vowel in contrast to the epenthetic vowel.
