RESUMO:

The purpose of this research is to analyze the representation of the Northeast in teaching materials for Secondary Education, approved by the Programa Nacional do Livro Didático (National Textbook Program) - (PNLD) for the year 2024. The evaluation encompassed a total of fourteen textbooks related to the ninth grade of Secondary Education, belonging to the fourteen History collections approved by the PNLD. The choice of this specific grade is justified by its responsibility to address the skill (EF09HI02) of the Base Nacional Comum Curricular (National Common Curricular Base) - BNCC, which involves characterizing and understanding the cycles of the republican history, identifying particularities of local and regional history until 1954. The period covered to understand this skill coincides with the time of the invention of the Brazilian Northeast and its geographical separation from the North of the country. The representation of the Northeast, in this context, becomes relevant, as the geographical separation translates into different meanings in the field of representations. The Northeast, as discussed by Durval Muniz de Albuquerque Jr. in his work "The Invention of the Northeast and Other Arts," emerged with a complexity of symbols, highlighting themes such as drought, banditry, religious fanaticism, and local political control as fundamental elements in constructing the region's image in the Brazilian popular imagination. This study aims to examine how textbooks, produced by publishers from the Southeast and written by authors from the Southeast and South of the country, represent the Northeast in the context of the First Republic. This phase of Brazilian history is notable not only for the invention of the Northeast but also for the themes that have become stereotypes of the region. Based on the concept of representation, in-depth analyses of the Northeast, and studies on textbooks as historical sources, the work is structured into four chapters. In the first chapter, the Brazilian historical context during the First Republic is presented, highlighting how specific themes analyzed in textbooks relate to this period. From the second chapter onwards, the results of analyses of three themes intrinsically linked to the Northeast in the popular imagination are presented: local political control, messianism, and banditry, each addressed in a dedicated chapter, respectively.
