SUMMARY:

This work analyzes the construction of memory on the liberation of the enslaved in Mossoró, which took place on September 30, 1883, and its use in history teaching through teaching practices aimed at an anti-racist education from the problematization of the "monuments" present in the urban space of the city. It is sought, through the journalistic narrative of The Mossoroense, to understand how the civic festivities, between 1904 and 1983, produced the representation of the city of Mossoró as "Land of Freedom." The articulation between the teaching of history and the use of these monuments occurs through the mobilization of the concept of "local heritage" and was carried out through educational mediations with the students of the 2nd year of the high school, the State School Professora Maria Stella Pinheiro Costa, located in the street Walter Wanderley, s/n. set Freedom I, in Mossoró, RN. Among the procedures used in the research were journalistic material on September 30, 1883, monuments (Statue of Liberty, Square of Redemption), exhibitions of the Lauro Municipal Museum of Scotland, Bibliographic Bulletin of the Municipal Prefecture of Mossoró and works of the memorialists Raimundo Nonato da Silva and Luís da Câmara Cascudo. Together with this work a didactic product, a didactic sequence, was developed, which proposes the discursion of the theme on abolition in Mossoró from the work with sources in the classroom. The didactic sequence was directed to the mobilization of knowledge that correlated past/present from the reflection on the effects of the historical process for black people, facts that can be observed and analysed by information transmitted both by the press, as for the official bodies on the places occupied by blacks in the most diverse social spaces, as well as the various forms of resistance and persistence of black social movements in search of the effectiveness of citizenship. In this sense, the present research, besides problematizing the journalistic source and the places of memory that crystallized official narratives about the end of slave labor in Mossoró, articulated didactic strategies that motivated the denaturalization of the official narratives on September 30 in Mossoró and stimulated reflective thinking on the importance of anti-racist education for the effectiveness of emancipatory social practices.
