RESUMO:

This research aims to understand how indigenous peoples were represented in the first years of the Brazilian republic, through the civic literature of Coelho Netto, Manoel Bomfim and Olavo Bilac. To do this, we analyzed the reading books used in Brazilian schools, produced by these intellectuals. This literature was aimed at children and young people, and brought with it a moralizing content at the time that dictated the model of Brazil aspired by the republic. There was a framing of citizens and an emptying of any social tension. To analyze this representation, we chose four works by the aforementioned authors, Contos Pátrios (1904); Children's Poems (1904); Pátria Brazileira (1909) and Via do Brasil (1910), the years in which the works were released define our chronological outline. As selected for the selection of these sources, we adopted the cross-section of textual genre, choosing a book of short stories, another of poetry, one of fiction and another of non-fiction. As an analysis category, we adopted the historian Roger Chartier's concept of representation. The research results point to the understanding that this literature is the result of colonialist historiography. Indigenous peoples were represented in them as outdated savages, who should be assimilated into civilized society. These ideas had in their genesis a positivist philosophy that arrived in Brazil in the mid-19th century and was a source of inspiration for pro-republic thinkers. His ideology was part of Brazilian politics in various spaces of power, including education, through his administrations or as an educational product, in the case of books on morality and civics. The discourse of modernity, understood in this literature, excluded the original peoples from this picture, they represented the past that should be overcome. Given this analysis, we understand that the scope and conditioning language of these moral and civic books strengthened and/or created stereotypes about these people. In this way, our work falls within a perspective marked by the search to overcome prejudiced positions, as we consider that education and the teaching of history can collaborate in the construction of a fairer society.
