SUMMARY:

This research focuses on the representations that 9th-grade students in Brazilian elementary education construct regarding African-based religions. It is based on the premise that, although Law 10.639/03— which mandates the inclusion of Afro-Brazilian History and Culture in the curriculum of basic education— has been in effect for over two decades, its practical impact remains limited and often ineffective, especially in light of a school education still shaped by Eurocentric and colonialist rationality. This context contributes to the persistence of stigmatized, prejudiced, and reductionist views about Afro-Brazilian religions among students. The study adopts a qualitative approach and is grounded in content analysis, following the methodological procedures proposed by Bardin. The sources of analysis will consist of drawings and written statements produced by students during pedagogical workshops, as well as official documents. The representations constructed by the students will be interpreted in light of cultural and postcolonial studies, particularly drawing on the concept of representation developed by Stuart Hall (2016) and Roger Chartier (1990), and on the notions of coloniality and decoloniality, as theorized by Aníbal Quijano (2005) and Walter Mignolo (2017). The research also incorporates the contributions of Catherine Walsh (2013), and, finally, the work of Reginaldo Prandi (1997) in the field of religion and Afro-Brazilian religiosity. Thus, this investigation seeks to problematize how discourses about Afro-Brazilian religions are constructed, reproduced, or challenged within the school environment. By providing students with opportunities to engage with Afro-diasporic knowledge and to revisit silenced historical narratives, the study aims to foster recognition of the heterogeneity of Brazilian society and the multiple ways of being, knowing, and existing in the world.
