Floodplain Memories: The Piranhas-Açu River Floods in the Perspective of Riverside Narratives.
Memory.Local History. Piranhas-Açu River.varzeanos.
The floodplain of the Piranhas-Açu River is a region with many peculiarities and contrasts. For years, it alternated between periods of severe drought, which brought hunger, the death of crops, livestock, and people, and periods of heavy rainfall, which caused major floods. A “varzeana,” daughter and granddaughter of floodplain dwellers, since childhood I have grown accustomed to hearing stories about the adventures of the Piranhas-Açu River, just as many other men and women of the floodplain have heard, witnessed, or endured the transformations of the river’s floodplain caused by nature. In this way, this investigation seeks to focus on an essential question: how do the ordinary people of Assú narrate their lives and their relationship with the Piranhas-Açu River? Researching the influence that this natural phenomenon has on the region of the Várzea do Açu and on the lives of its inhabitants through their memory will be a deep dive into the history of the people of the floodplain of the city of Assú/RN, through the accounts of their lived experiences. To this end, in addition to memory, we draw on official documents, newspaper clippings, accounts of memorialists such as Manoel Rodrigues de Melo, who provides a report in his book Várzea do Açu (1940), and also reflections through the lens of Circe Bittencourt (2018), Benjamin (1987), Certeau (1998), Raquel Pinto (2017), Siman and Miranda (2013), among other scholars. For methodological purposes, this is a study with a qualitative approach, combined with bibliographical and documentary research. The study of the Várzea do Açu in relation to the Piranhas-Açu River highlights the memory of the floodplain’s inhabitants and values local history, which is rarely explored from this perspective.
