RESUMO:

School failure in rural education throughout Brazil's republican history has been the subject of several debates among educators, politicians and social movements. This failure is reflected in serious educational problems such as the low academic performance of students living in settlements, ranches or farms. Given all of this, this dissertation intends to present research on the problems of rural public education in the Hipólito Settlement, located in the city of Mossoró-RN, through school archives inserted in the Evilásio Leão Municipal School, which is an educational institution in this settlement. The research has the general objective of revealing the problems of rural education in this settlement by creating a school census with tables and graphs showing the number of students who were in a situation of school dropout, dropout, failure and age-grade distortion between the years 1990 to 2000. This dissertation will have the History of Education as its theoretical reference and school archives as a source of research. To expand the debate, the graphs and tables will be compared with others at national level subsidized by IBGE and Inep/Mec. The graphs and tables constructed in this research will be used not only for numerical purposes (quantitative), but also to bring up a debate (qualitative). The objective is to build a discussion about rural education not only at a local level but also at a national level.
