RESUMO:

This academic article provides a comprehensive analysis of alcoholism in Brazil, from the development of medical practices in the 19th century to the early 20th century, highlighting the complexity of interactions between medicine, society, and legislation. We investigate the influence of European, especially French, medicine on Brazilian medical training and how local traditional practices remained alongside these influences. We examine the emergence of alcoholism as a diagnostic category, reflecting medical and social changes and how different social classes were affected and perceived in relation to alcohol consumption. The article highlights the adaptation and challenges of European clinical medicine to the Brazilian context, facing difficulties in applicability and relevance against local social and cultural realities. We discuss how alcoholism, initially integrated into cultural and social practices, came to be viewed through a pathological lens, reflecting not just a shift in medical understanding but also in social attitudes and moral values, particularly of the ruling class. Furthermore, we address the proposals and solutions presented by doctors and thinkers of the time to combat alcoholism, demonstrating the concern with this "grave problem." We analyze how legislation related to alcoholics, discussing their moral, criminal, and civil responsibility in society, and how public policies sought to mitigate the impacts of alcoholism, highlighting the actions of temperance societies. Finally, the article reflects on the impacts of the anti-alcoholic discourse on public policies and public opinion, exemplified by the coverage of the newspaper O PAIZ and the propaganda of the abstinence movement. This study provides a holistic view of alcoholism in Brazil, considering the medical, social, and legislative dimensions, and how they interconnect and evolve over time.
