RESUMO:

Introduction: Non-carious lesions (LNCs) constitute one of the main problems in the
population's oral health, their clinical signs are as present in the daily routine of the dental
clinic as caries. The formation and progression of these lesions are due to the association of
three main etiological factors that, when added to risk factors, such as health education,
educational level and socioeconomic factors, are related to the progression of the disease in
populations of different age groups. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between the
prevalence of non-carious lesions, educational level and knowledge in oral health.
Methodology: This is an analytical, cross-sectional study, of a quantitative nature, with
patients undergoing dental care at the Dental School Clinics of the State University of Rio
Grande do Norte, Caicó/RN campus. Patients completed questionnaires about
sociodemographic data and access to and use of health services. To assess the level of Oral
Health Literacy (ASB), the Brazilian Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Dentistry
(BREALD-30) was applied, which makes it possible to classify knowledge into a low level of
literacy (score ≤ 21 points), moderate level ( ranging from 22 to 25 points) or high level
(score ≥ 26 points). For diagnosis and classification of LNCs, patients underwent clinical
examination, which followed the criteria of Smith and Knight, 1984. Results: The final
sample consisted of 62 patients and there was no sample loss. The prevalence found for LNC
was 96.8% (n=60), with 48.4% (n=30) of the lesions located on the incisal surface and 41.9%
(n=26) on the cervical surface. Wear on the incisal face was more present in the population
between 18 and 30 years old (n=14), while wear on the cervical face was more present in the
population between 41 and 50 years old (n=10). The prevalence of score 2 was higher for the
age group from 41 to 50 years, with 34.4% (n=11), while the prevalence for grade 3 was
higher for the age group from 51 to 60 years, with 37 .5% (n=6) and grade 4, for the age
group over 61 years old, with 50% (n=2). A majority of 51.6% of survey participants have a
high level of ASB, 30.7% have a low level of knowledge, while 17.7% have a moderate level.
Fisher's exact test showed that there is an association between LNC and income (p=0.032),
LNC and education (p=0.038). The injury score was associated with age group (p=0.003),
position the member holds in the family (p=0.047) and education level (p=0.033). An
association was observed between ASB levels and age group (p=0.024), self-declared race
(p=0.002), socioeconomic level (p=0.004) and education (p=0.001). There was also
significance between ASB and the need for current dental treatment (p= 0.027), and location
of the last consultation (p=0.008). The Chi-square test of independence showed that there is
an association between ASB and the reason for the last visit to the dentist (p=0.024).
Conclusions: The study showed a significant relationship between the prevalence of non-
Carious Lesions, a high level of Oral Health Literacy, a high socioeconomic level and a high
level of education.
