RESUMO:

Introduction: Chagas disease, a neglected ailment, manifests in clinical forms ranging from indeterminate to cardiac, digestive, and cardiogastrointestinal. In Brazil, an estimated 3.2 million cases were reported in 2020, with Rio Grande do Norte considered to have limited risk. Within this context, nurses play a pivotal role in care provision, with Nursing Care Systematization serving as an essential tool. The scientific literature on Nursing care for individuals with Chagas disease, particularly regarding Nursing Diagnoses, remains notably sparse. Objectives: The study aims to identify the primary Nursing Diagnoses employed in individuals with Chronic Chagas Disease under the care of the Chagas Disease Outpatient Clinic at the University of the State of Rio Grande do Norte. Additionally, it seeks to examine the association between Nursing Diagnoses and sociodemographic variables as well as lifestyle habits, along with clinical variables and aspects of self-care. Materials and Methods: This study employs a cross-sectional and descriptive design with a quantitative approach, conducted in the Western Potiguar Mesoregion. The research took place at the Chagas Disease Outpatient Clinic of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, which manages an average of 162 appointments annually. Following calculations, the sample comprised 98 individuals with chronic Chagas disease. Nursing consultations were conducted guided by a data collection instrument and adhering to the Orem Theory, incorporating medical history and physical examination. Nursing Diagnoses were established based on the 12th edition of the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association – International Nursing Diagnoses. The analysis encompassed descriptive statistics as well as statistical tests such as Pearson's chi-squared test and Fisher's Exact Test. The research received approval from the Research Ethics Committee of the University of the State of Rio Grande do Norte. Results: The primary Nursing Diagnoses identified were Sedentary Lifestyle, Risk for Impaired Cardiovascular Function, and Deficient Knowledge. Sociodemographic and clinical variables demonstrated a statistically significant association with the Nursing Diagnoses of Risk for Impaired Cardiovascular Function, Impaired Swallowing, Overweight, Decreased Engagement in Leisure Activities, Impaired Urinary Elimination, Risk for Falls in Adults, Anxiety, Insomnia, and Deficient Knowledge. Discussion: The discourse concerning Nursing Diagnoses is in its early stages, yet the results indicate specific care needs. While not universally applicable, understanding the primary Nursing Diagnoses in individuals with Chagas disease illuminates the diverse nature of their care requirements. Thus, it is incumbent upon nursing professionals to deepen their engagement in knowledge and discussion pertaining to the care of individuals with Chagas disease. Conclusion: The research findings provided a crucial mapping of the primary Nursing Diagnoses in Chagas disease patients, establishing a foundation for the development of regional and national care plans. The Chagas Disease Outpatient Clinic at the University of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, originally centered on medical, nutritional, and psychological care, now incorporates nursing consultations, strengthening the interprofessional approach. Future longitudinal studies are recommended to evaluate the effectiveness of self-care in this population based on the unique aspects of Chagas disease.
