RESUMO:

Grief is a singular and universal process, established in the face of the possibility of significant loss or its occurrence. Thus, every loss demands that mourning be experienced, which is an essential process for the reconstruction and organization of the subject himself, his life context and relationships. Within this context, the diagnosis and/or prognosis of a chronic disease is generally experienced in a painful way on a biological, psychological, social and spiritual level. In this sense, Chagas Disease is a chronic disease, with significant prevalence and a high rate of morbidity and mortality, in which its sufferers suffer from the repercussions of physical pain, functional impairment and compromised well-being, given the manifestations that impact on quality of life, routine and autonomy. Furthermore, the psychosocial aspect is strongly sensitized, considering that these subjects face changes in their way of being in the world, increased by the perception of themselves as incapable and vulnerable, added to the fear of death. The research aims to understand the losses and grief experienced by subjects with Chagas Disease. To achieve this, the methodological strategy was based on a qualitative approach, using a semi-structured interview guide. The research took place at the Chagas Disease Outpatient Clinic of the State University of Rio Grande do Norte, with preliminary data from eight chagasic subjects, which were analyzed by Bardin Content Analysis, using the IRaMuTeQ software. The study resulted in five classes, which were named by the researcher and which present excerpts considered most representative of the content brought by the participants. The study subjects highlighted the inevitable changes and adaptations faced with routine symptoms and pain, reverberating and preventing the full performance of daily activities, work, leisure, among others. Faced with the experience of affections, pain and hospitalizations faced by people with CD, coping mechanisms are developed for this condition of illness, mainly citing spirituality and faith. Those with CD also mentioned some experiences of loss throughout their life trajectories, however, they did not express appropriation of such experience in their own reality, thus, not recognizing it. Taking into account that the participants' experience expresses a non-legitimized grief, it is clear that this directly impacts the provision of support and care from the circle of close people. It was concluded that the study allowed an approximation of the unique experience of subjects with CD and their losses resulting from this chronic illness, their stigmas, fears, changes and, above all, the illegitimacy of the experience of the grieving process due to their condition. Variations in pain and discomfort faced by this population are noted, in which these affects are not restricted only to those with CD with symptoms of heart or digestive disease, considering that all participants expressed pain, adaptations and losses along the way.
