RESUMO:

Population aging has brought important changes to the Brazilian demographic profile, generating challenges that have enabled the creation of laws and policies that ensure the rights of elderly people in Brazil. The present descriptive study with a qualitative and quantitative nature proposed to analyze nursing care for elderly people in the Family Health Strategy (ESF) in Alto Sertão da Paraíba, part of the 9th (ninth) Regional Health Management of Paraíba. The sample was initially made up of 26 (twenty-six) nurses who work in the ESF and 03 (three) health secretaries from the municipalities of Cachoeira dos Índios, Cajazeiras and São José de Piranhas, who responded to semi-structured interviews, as well as secondary data obtained from the databases of the official bodies of the selected municipalities were used. The preliminary qualitative results of the study were analyzed using the N-Vivo software and the quantitative data, using percentage data, allowing a preliminary observation that the nursing actions for the elderly in the ESF pointed out by the nurses and health secretaries of the three selected municipalities are basically o Hiperdia and home visits. We also realized through the answers provided by the participants that there is no specific program or continuing training courses and permanent education aimed at health care for elderly people, as recommended by PNSPI, allowing us to preliminarily conclude that despite the existence of laws and policies that ensure the rights of elderly people, there is still a fragility in the nursing care offered by nurses who work in the ESF in the selected municipalities, requiring a focus on the health managers of the three spheres of government for professional qualification related to the problems that elderly people face and the creation or readjustment of specific programs for this segment of the population.
