RESUMO:

This study investigates how discourses on mental health present in
English-language textbooks of the new high school are articulated to neoliberal governmentality and
engender processes of student subjectivation. In a more detailed way, this work seeks to (i) describe
the historical conditions that allow the irruption of mental health discourses in English textbooks of
the new high school; (ii) understand how the insertion of socioemotional skills in the curriculum of
the new high school is related to the developments of neoliberalism in the educational field; (iii) to
investigate the relationship between mental health in textbooks with interests and the modus operandi
of neoliberal governmentality in the management of psychic suffering and (iv) to delineate the
processes of subjectivation for high school students, from these discourses present in the English
language textbook. Therefore, we use some Foucauldian concepts as the primary engine for the
theoretical-analytical development of this research, namely, the concepts of discourse, enunciation,
knowledge, power, subjectivity, device and neoliberal governmentality. In addition, other studies
were also relevant theoretical bases, such as Deleuze (1992; 1996); Sennet (2006), Dardot and Laval
(2016); Han (2015, 2018); Safatle, Silva Júnior and Dunker (2020); Caponi and Daré (2020) and
Castiel (2021), to name a few. Methodologically, this study is inserted in the field of Foucaultian
discursive studies, specifically part archeogenealogic method of Michel Foucault and is constituted as
a descriptive-interpretative and documentary research of qualitative nature. The corpus of study was
extracted from two English-language textbooks, approved by the National Program of Books and
Didactic Material (PNLD), approved in 2021. The verb-visual statements were extracted from the
books English Interaction, by Albina Escobar and Juliana Franco Tavares (2020) by the Brazilian
publisher and from the English Vibes for Brazilians Learners, by Claúdio Franco and Kátia Tavares
(2020) by the publisher FTD. The partial analyses allow to observe the functioning of strategies of
disciplinarization and regulation of the conducts and behaviors of the students, especially with regard
to the socioemotional skills linked to the biopolitical production of a flexible subject, resilient and
emotionally skilled. These mechanisms of governmentality seem to operate at the service of a
strategic (re)configuration of subjectivities able to adapt to social instabilities.
