RESUMO:

The concept of culture industry, coined by Adorno and Horkheimer (2006), refers to a
movement of standardization and repetition that acts directly on the production and
consumption of cultural goods. According to the aforementioned authors, the main
representative of this industry is cinema, especially the one made in America, which, in its
classic times, became a universal model of artistic creation and a powerful ideological
vehicle. Its great influence on Brazilian production stimulated the reaction of filmmakers
such as Glauber Rocha, an avant-garde and revolutionary director. Observing the
characteristics of Rocha's cinema that contrast with the standards of the culture industry, this
work proposes a reading of the films Deus e o diabo na terra do sol (1964) and O Dragão da
maldade contra o santo ventoreiro (1969), having as reference the Adornian thought, as well
as the contribution of authors such as Xavier (2007, 2012) and Oliveira (2021), whose
research stands out among those that make up the critical corpus dedicated to the work of the
Brazilian filmmaker. Our objective is to analyze the image that Rocha gives to the cangaceiro
in the films in question and to show how this image differs from that presented by the
productions of the nordestern, a national (sub)genre that borrows the formula that defines the

American Western and transforms the cangaço in a Hollywood show. However, we do not
claim that Rocha's cinema is outside the industry mechanism, but that he establishes tensions
and rupture points when dialoguing with traditional cinematographic genres, such as the
Western itself, and with genres of popular culture, such as cordel literature. In addition to the
references already mentioned, scholars of banditry, such as Mello (2011), Hobsbawm (2015)
and Jasmin (2016), and Benjamin (2020), authors whose theoretical contributions are resorted
to in order to understand the role of the storyteller, a central element in the works under
study. Along the way, we analyzed Rocha's advances and setbacks in relation to conventional
cinema and commented on the problematization of a political and social nature present in the
chosen fictions.
