Abstract

The dialogue between literature and history has always been fruitful, even before the consolidation of these two fields of knowledge. And it is from this dialogue that the Historical Novel is constituted, genre focused by our research, more specifically those produced in contemporaneity, moment in which its production still persists and is in full expansion. With this assumption in mind, in this work we propose to carry out a critical-analytical study of the works Desde que o samba é samba, by Paulo Lins and Rio Negro 50, by Nei Lopes, in order to investigate the nuances of the contemporary Brazilian Historical Novel. Especially those that, like the aforementioned works, intend to focus on the experiences and histories of politically minority groups, such as black men and women and residents of the periphery, as well as to bring the history of black and Afro-diasporic culture and religiosity, almost always relegated to oblivion by official history, as a way to represent narratives and voices dissonant both from the canon and from traditional Brazilian historiography. In Desde que o samba é samba, the story of the formation of the samba musical genre, of its first school, and of the consolidation of Umbanda is presented. Paulo Lins uses historically-based characters from primary sources and other fictionalized characters to represent the customs and social practices surrounding samba in the São Carlos slum, in Rio de Janeiro, in the mid-1920s. In Rio Negro 50, we get to know the history of black intellectuals, focusing on the narratives of the Afro-Brazilian population, from 1950 to 1960. In this work we base ourselves mainly on the theoretical contributions of Luckács (2011); Weinhartdt (1994) and (2019); Esteves (2010); Bastos (2007); Dalcastagné (2002) and (2012); Souza (2017) and (2021); Bhabha (2019); Sodré (1998); Simas (2019); Candido (1993), (2003) and (2009); Fanon (2008) and Munamga (1988), among others. Therefore, we seek to investigate which elements and trends of these novels represent conformity and/or rupture in relation to the classic model of Historical Romance, whether in terms of the use of discourse and historical facts, or in the way of bringing to the genre a plurality of themes, aesthetic possibilities in the construction of the text, and points of view regarding the types of characters privileged to be represented.
