CORDIALITY IN THE NOVEL ALDEOTA, BY JÁDER DE CARVALHO
Jáder de Carvalho; Cordiality. Society. Literature.
This dissertation aims to analyze the novel Aldeota (1963) under the notion of cordiality, in particular Sérgio Buarque de Holanda's conceptions, in Raízes do Brasil (2014), and Jessé Souza's, in A elite do atraso (2019). In this study, it will be sought, through the itinerary of the main character, Francisco das Chagas, who from humble origins becomes one of the most influential and corrupt businessmen in the city of Fortaleza, Ceará, to show cordiality in his phases and faces, which consolidate him as the “cordial man”. In view of this, in order to analyze this novel, it is necessary to carry out in-depth research on this concept in the literature, as well as in the sociology and history of Brazil, having as a theoretical basis the studies on the formation of Brazilian social thought by Freyre (2006), Buarque de Holanda (2014), Prado Júnior (2011), Couto (1932), Souza (2019) and DaMatta (1936), as well as the studies on Brazilian literature by Candido (2000), (2006) and (2014), Lafetá ( 2004), and (1984), Bosi (2006), Bueno (2015), and about the author Jáder de Carvalho and his work, the studies of Macedo (2019), Montenegro (1953), Leal (2000), Marques (2015), Carvalho da Silva and Cavalcante Carvalho (2013), Parente (2011), among others, whose theoretical studies we use to link the theme addressed to the novel in question. According to the partial results obtained in this research, it is noticeable how Aldeota's narrative contemplates the social issues that involve the studies mentioned above, showing the relevance of this novel, as well as the author Jáder de Carvalho for Brazilian society and literature.
