RESUMO:

Language, being social, shapes and is shaped by interacting subjects. Therefore, when using it, linguistic choices provide clues about the context, the communicative intention, the social roles assumed, the positions and the identity of the speaker/writer. Thus, this thesis has the general objective of studying the construction of interpersonal relationships, through Modality, in oral reports of workers at sugar cane mills and flour mills in the Alto Oeste Potiguar. The theoretical assumptions that support this research are from SystemicFunctional Grammar (GSF), specifically about the MODE system, responsible for expressing interpersonal meanings, thus, the basic authors used are Halliday (1994), Halliday and Matthiessen (2014), Ghio and Fernández (2008), Fuzer and Cabral (2014), among others that deal with the GSF. The approach used is part of the qualitative and quantitative paradigms and the method is deductive. The corpus used is composed of twenty interviews, which present reports of sugarcane mill workers and flour mills, provided by the Museu de Cultura Sertaneja (MCS). For this research, we obtained the transcripts of the recordings of the interviews carried out orally. Such texts are part of the MCS virtual collection and refer to the first edition of the Programa Raízes da Cultura Sertaneja – PROCULT (CARVALHO, 2020), which, in turn, resulted in the exhibition entitled “Memories of Engenhos and Houses of Flour”. The results obtained so far show 701 occurrences of Modality, the modalization shows 254 occurrences of terms that indicate probability and 281 occurrences of terms that indicate usuality, and the modulation shows 204 occurrences of terms that indicate obligation and only 2 occurrences of terms that indicate inclination. The use of modalization and the use of modulation portray a discrepancy in terms of the number of occurrences, while the first displays 525 occurrences, the second displays only 206 occurrences. Therefore, it is notorious that the subjects assume positions and make judgments about what they enunciate, but what stands out is the use of Modalization, which is focused on the exchange of information, and this is justified by virtue, among other factors, of the texts used in our research are produced with the intention of presenting narratives of sugarcane and mill workers.
