RESUMO:

Lygia Fagundes Telles has always been interested in non-human animals as protagonists in her narratives, which is evident in her second collection of short stories, "Seminário dos ratos" (1977). From the allegorical writing of the story that gives the book its title to the unusual, ambiguous perspective that suggests an intimate and (homo)affectionate intertwining between human and non-human animals in the story "Tigrela," the author's sensitivity is remarkable in evoking our inherent animality in one of her early stories, inviting us to reconsider the boundaries that attempt to separate species and hierarchically divide them. In works such as "A Noite escura e mais eu" (1995) and "Invenção e memória" (2000), as her perception of animals moves away from an allegorical or metaphorical bias, in some stories such as "O crachá nos dentes" and "Suicídio na granja," the confrontation between them intensifies, the tension and doubt grow, bringing them closer to the point of confusion. This proximity occurs, first and foremost, through a critique of the idea of human nature. The novel "As horas nuas" is a clear example of this representation approach; just listen (and reason) with the cat. Secondly, considering our precarious notions of reality, both within and outside of literature, these devices are also problematized in the structure of the story "Rua Sabará, 400"; and finally, the presence (strange and familiar) of the non-human animal as an implacable counterpoint to our unsustainable humanity. This confrontational animality is fostered by the author through the fantastic mode it is through the supernatural that one can reach, through mimetic discourse, the non-human animal and what lies within us. It is this perspective that this thesis aims to defend by articulating Animal Studies and theories of the fantastic in the analysis of Lygia Fagundes Telles' short stories that enhance the protagonism of the animal. To do so, other authors will guide this work, such as Derrida, Heidegger, Foucault, Deleuze, Delort, Remo Ceserani; and considering the interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary aspect of this study, Darwin, Foley, Haraway, Peter Singer, Waldau, Kari Weil, etc. As we have not found research with this focus on Lygia Fagundes Telles and her short stories, the justification of this thesis lies in its novelty and contribution to literary studies.
