RESUMO:

Character, in whatever the work and its genre, is one of the most discussed elements in research, as it is she who directs the plot and, consequently, is responsible for the action in the story, however, this is not a common role for the narrator , unless, as is not the case here, he is a character narrator. Based on this, our object of work would become contestable, if it were not for its ability, even when exercising only the function of narrating the facts, as a concrete mission, it did not transcend the barriers of logic and establish itself on both levels. Because, without ceasing to occupy the place of narrator distanced from the drama, in the sense of merely presenting the actions, the narrator of Sobrados e Mocambos, by Hermilo Borba Filho, suddenly invades the scene and transforms into a character in action. An attitude that is just one among many others, discussed here, that make this “character” one of the most interesting figures in the dramatic world. His nature, always based on spontaneity that ranges from acidic irreverence to blatant sarcasm, gives his personality an air of debauchery and freedom that does not go unnoticed by the play's audience. The show is, in many ways, not only presented, but structured according to his opinion. In this way, Hermilo's play, despite being based on the historical-sociological work of Gilberto Freyre, goes astray and opposes it in several ways, the most relevant of which is the conduct of the facts shaped by the narrator who, always thirsty by putting his finger on the wound of history, he shamelessly reveals the customs and perversions of the patriarchs of Brazilian mansions. In this context, this research uses both works, collecting from one the material of comparison to the other, to find the path that leads to an understanding of Borba Filho's ideals, by portraying through his narrator, opinions that differ from those of Freyre. To this end, our theoretical basis, reflecting the opinions of Cadengue (2011), Candido (1965), Freyre (1972) and Nobrega (2015), follows the paths that highlight the influences of Borba Filho, his role in the regionalist movement and the search for a modern art, based on the evocation of the popular as a way of achieving national artistic coherence. Based on the considerations of Ferreira (2021), Genú (2016), lima (2007), among others, for a better analysis and understanding of our object and the intentions of its creator.
