RESUMO:

The research presents as a study theme the fragility of the absence of environmental sanitation in the municipality of Portalegre/RN, which supposedly compromises the quality of life of the local population, in addition to the development of economic, social and environmental aspects. It is worth noting that the new sanitation framework, updated in 2020, may influence the feasibility of implementing environmental sanitation in Portalegre/RN. The general objective of the study is to analyze the possible interferences of the legal framework of basic sanitation in Brazil, updated in 2020, in the environmental sanitation of Portalegre/RN. As specific goals: a. carry out a diagnosis of environmental sanitation in Portalegre/RN in the axes: water supply, sanitary sewage, urban solid waste management, urban rainwater management, disease vector control, and the discipline of occupation and use of soil; b. Investigate the impacts of the environmental sanitation scenario on physical, chemical, biological and socioeconomic environments in Portalegre/RN; c. analyze how the new legal framework can contribute to the change, in positive or negative terms, in the environmental sanitation of Portalegre/RN. The methodology fits as quantitative and qualitative and the research instruments will be: bibliographical research, application of questionnaires, research and documental analysis, field research and data analysis. The data collection technique is based on a semi-structured questionnaire with open and closed questions to the population. The expected results of the research is that the municipality presents fragility in environmental sanitation, which supposedly compromises the population's quality of life, and with the update of the new legal framework for sanitation, it may influence the feasibility of implementing environmental sanitation in Portalegre /RN.
