MANAGEMENT OF SOLID WASTE FROM THE MUNICIPALITIES THAT ARE PART OF THE INTERMUNICIPAL

Solid waste management is a topic that is currently being debated, taking into account the impacts caused by the absence of public policies or their poor application. Although significant advances were notorious after the institution of the national solid waste policy, Law 12.305/2010, there is still a lot to be done. In Rio Grande do Norte, the state policy has distributed municipalities by region, and through this grouping aims to build sanitary landfills managed in a consortium in each region. The reality of municipalities in Potiguares does not differ in the national context, lack of policies aimed at managing solid waste in order to mitigate its environmental, economic, social, territorial impacts, among others. In Alto Oeste Potiguar, more precisely in the region of Pau dos Ferros, eleven municipalities are components, of which only seven are in compliance with the National Sanitation Information System. The main objective of this research was to investigate the management of solid waste in these municipalities, present its impacts and, at the same time, debate solutions and the creation of a technical-theoretical collection. For that, a bibliographical and documental research was developed, followed by a field work. The 18th SNIS report, the state solid waste policy and the field work showed the inexistence of public policies aimed at efficient solid waste management and, consequently, a scenario of pollution, landfills, lack of investments, lack of political articulation and a stalled landfill project.
