RESUMO:

Population displacements and all the factors related to this phenomenon are important in the constitution of geographic space. Within population mobility, commuting to work or study has gained prominence. In the commuting movement for educational purposes, there is the daily displacement of higher education students. These take place between the place of their residences and the headquarters of the municipalities in which their Higher Education Institutions - HEIs are located. In this perspective, the general objective of this work is to analyze the commuting movements and their consequences in the daily commute of undergraduate students from Aurora (CE) to the host cities of their respective HEIs, motivated by recent policies of democratization and interiorization of higher education in Brazil. This is a research of a mixed nature, as it combines both quantitative and qualitative methods, and an exploratory one, as it is a case study. For the discussion of the first 03 (three) sections, a survey of the conceptual theoretical framework on migrations and commuting in Brazil, Northeast and Semiarid was carried out; Policies and Programs for the Expansion and Internalization of Higher Education in the country, focusing on the cities of Cajazeiras (PB), Crato (CE) and Juazeiro do Norte (CE); IBGE surveys and microdata collection; study by the Regional Division of Brazil into Immediate Geographic Regions and Intermediate Geographic Regions (IBGE, 2017) and the research report on Regions of Influences of Cities (REGIC, 2018), in order to characterize the hierarchy and urban network of the municipalities receiving the municipalities studied. The empirical research was divided into two stages: application of a socioeconomic questionnaire to profile the students and a semi-structured interview to analyze the possible intervening agents of daily commuting. The findings corroborate the hypothesis raised in the research that the public that practices daily commuting has fragile socioeconomic characteristics with a monthly family income of up to 02 (two) minimum wages, are mostly female, come from public schools and therefore see commuting as an alternative to access higher education. However, they are subject to daily commutes lasting hours, exposed to risks, natural weather and fatigue that end up making their academic life difficult.
