RESUMO:
The Immediate Geographic Region of Cajazeiras is located in the extreme west of Paraíba and has 12 municipalities, namely: Bom Jesus, Bonito de Santa , Cachoeira dos Índios, Cajazeiras, Carrapateira, Monte Horebe, Poço de José de Moura, Santa Helena, São João do Rio do Peixe, São José de Piranhas, Serra Grande and Triunfo. Together, the municipalities have a population estimate of more than 155 thousand inhabitants, distributed in a territory of 2,963.6 square kilometers, considered a relevant population contingent. This paper presents the central problem about the temporal and spatial amplitude of hydrometeorological disasters that occur in the Immediate Geographic Region of Cajazeiras/PB, triggered by intense and extreme rainfall events. Therefore, this problem was delimited by the hypothesis that, if hydrometeorological natural disasters are triggered by intense and extreme rainfall events, then it is necessary to verify information about the capacity of these events to produce impacts in the geographic space, the dimension of the damage on a regional scale and the challenges and criteria for the creation of public policies aimed at protecting society in the face of damages. which includes, in the face of these conjunctures, the environmental analysis to the detriment of the socio-environmental environment, as well as the necessary planning in the face of the current realities of the territories. Despite the finding that intense and extreme rainfall events trigger hydrological disasters, the issue of records of hydrological and geological disasters associated with the occurrence of rainfall events in a larger staggering amplitude, i.e., on a regional scale, has not yet been explored. This work, based on three relevant concepts: Geographic Region, Regional Climatology and Natural Disasters, had its theoretical structure based on the rainfall characteristics of the Immediate Geographic Region of Cajazeiras/PB, with emphasis on Natural Disasters associated with extreme rainfall events in the territories and presented as a general objective to evaluate the occurrence of natural disasters associated with intense and extreme rainfall events in the Immediate Geographic Region of Cajazeiras/PB between 2003 and 2021. To meet the objectives, six steps were necessary: 1) Bibliographic research; 2) Collection of rainfall data; 3) Organization and treatment of data in spreadsheets; 4) Identification of the impacts caused by extreme rainfall events and the resulting natural disasters; 5) Analysis of the data obtained through the observation of the indicators considered in the research and 6) Spatial representation of climate information and natural disasters through thematic maps on a regional scale and for each municipality. A total of 16 hydrometeorological disasters were identified in the region, two in 2004, nine in 2008 and 5 in 2009. In the analysis of the event that has a damage assessment record AVADAN, it was found that the damages occurred both with impacts on society and on environmental systems. Among the human damage recorded, the total number of people directly affected stands out: 379 people, where damaged and destroyed homes were counted, with the most direct impact on people. It was found that the municipalities of Triunfo, Poço de José de Moura and São João do Rio do Peixe can be considered the critical area of the Immediate Geographic Region of Cajazeiras to adverse events of a hydrometeorological nature due to natural conditions, land use and occupation, occurrence of rainfall events and vulnerability to flooding, whether in fluvial stretches or throughout the municipality.
