RESUMO:

This work is an investigation into the implementation of Law 2,717, dated December 27, 2010, which establishes the Educational Responsibility policy in the municipality of Mossoró/RN, exploring what is stipulated in the legislation and what has been practiced in the Municipal Education Network. The general objective of this research is to evaluate the implementation of the Educational Responsibility Law in the municipality of Mossoró/RN, identifying the accountability aspects present in the municipal education management and establishing a correlation between what is stated in this legal provision and what has been practiced in the Municipal Education Network. Based on an approach grounded in Historical-Dialectical Materialism, this study includes a literature review and document analysis to examine the theoretical-conceptual aspects of accountability in education, the trends in its meaning, and the relationship with the New Public Management. The bills related to Educational Responsibility, under consideration in the national legislature, are also explored, highlighting their objectives, progress, and the various actors involved. It is argued that accountability in public administration, especially in education, is a complex and ever-evolving topic, requiring critical reflection on its conceptualization and application, taking into account the complexities and specificities of each political, economic, and social context in which accountability processes are implemented, ensuring that accountability considers the diversity of realities and needs of schools and students.
