RESUMO:

The Brazilian semi-arid region is composed of vegetation that has unique characteristics and is part of the Caatinga Biome. This Biome is exclusively Brazilian, it has a wide variety of fauna and flora that is still unknown in the scientific community. As it is a semi-arid environment, the vegetation in this region faces many challenges, from water scarcity to anthropic actions occurring in the Caatinga. Therefore, the need to know the temporal dynamics of vegetation has been intensifying, as well as the levels of environmental degradation that affect the region. The objective of this work is to analyze the temporal and spatial dynamics of the vegetation cover of the micro-region of Umarizal-RN, as well as the processes of environmental degradation that have occurred in the last (twenty) years. The methodological procedures used were: Satellite images from the Landsat series, specifically Landsat 5, Landsat 8 and Landsat 9 both for the dry period and for the wet period. For the vegetation analysis, the following indices were used: SAVI, RVI and IAF. The QGIS software, version 3.28.3, was used to create maps of vegetation cover and land use, as well as levels of degradation. The SAVI indices work on the photosynthetic activity of the vegetation, where the greater the photosynthetic activity, the greater the SAVI value. After the analysis, it can be observed that the Savi values were higher in the rainy season, as expected in semi-arid regions, that the vegetation remains green in periods of greater precipitation and loses its hue throughout the year, the year of 2017 stood out for the low photosynthetic activity in both periods, due to the low levels of precipitation presented in the year in all municipalities, the years 2000, 2007, and 2022 presented large vegetated areas, mainly in the rainy periods, and the year 2014 stood out both in the rainy season and in the dry season, showing a high photosynthetic rate.
