RESUMO:

The right to access to education for young people and adults is preserved by the Federal Constitution and guaranteed by the State. Youth and Adult Education (EJA) is a teaching modality aimed at young people, adults and elderly people who did not complete their studies at the appropriate age and wish to return to their studies at some point in their lives. Focusing on the teaching of geography in EJA, the present research has the general objective of analyzing the teaching of Geography in the Youth and Adult Education (EJA) modality, from a Freirean perspective, in a state public school in the municipality of Pau dos Ferros, in Rio Grande do Norte (RN). The study has a qualitative approach (Minayo, 2001), assuming an exploratory and descriptive character (Gil, 2011) and a case study type (Godoy, 1995). We use the studies of Freire (1987, 1996) from the perspective of liberating education, associating it with the teaching of Geography and EJA. Under the eyes of EJA students and teachers, we carried out the research with three students enrolled in the 5th period (8th and 9th) of elementary school II, as well as with the EJA educator. As for the research instruments for data collection, the investigative form, the semi-structured questionnaire, classroom observation, using the observation diary and the pedagogical workshop were used. The data were analyzed according to their particularities, with popular knowledge as the category of analysis in conjunction with curricular content, using the Freirean liberating perspective associated with the teaching of Geography at EJA. From the results obtained, it is clear that students face challenges in remaining at school, with absence intervals of between 2 and 6 years, for a variety of reasons. The challenges faced directly reflected the difficulties in relating popular knowledge to curricular content. The teacher's mediation in the classroom has awakened the development of students' reflection and criticality. Thus, the teacher has assumed a teaching stance that seeks to connect popular knowledge with curricular content, developing her teaching practice focused on the Freirean liberating perspective.
